Driver surrendered after fatal crash in Waushara County

Posted under Wrongful death

A day after a fatal hit and run accident killed a bicyclist in the Town of Leon, a driver turned himself in as the person responsible for the wreck, an Associated Press article stated on February 15.

According to the sheriff’s office, the man admitted crashing into 56-year-old bicyclist James Shafer on County Road EE. Dispatchers were informed around 3:00 a.m. about an accident that involved a bicycle rider. The vehicle drove away after the crash. Shafer, of rural Redgranite, reportedly died at the crash site, police stated. Shafer was reportedly equipped with visibility devices when he was struck by the vehicle. The driver responsible, who was not named by authorities, is currently awaiting charges while in police custody.
