Jack Phoumarrath died of alcohol poisoning on December 10, 2005 while undergoing hazing from the Lambda Phi Epsilon fraternity at the University of Texas. Today his family received a settlement of $4 million. They plan to use the money to establish a scholarship named after Phoumarrath at the university, which would allow the student who wins it to attend classes while working on a program to address the issue of binge drinking on campus. Phoumarrath’s family also plans to release a video for college students outlining the dangers of excessive drinking.
