Baxter Confirms “Irregularities” in Heparin

Posted under Uncategorized

Baxter Healthcare Corp., manufacturer of the heparin linked to 4 deaths and hundreds of adverse reactions, announced that it had found possible “irregularities” in several lots of its heparin, including some which contained an active ingredient produced at a plant in China. Both Baxter and the FDA warned the public not to jump to conclusions, saying it was too early to determine whether the irregularities can be blamed on the Chinese manufacturer, or whether the irregularities played any role in the adverse reactions and deaths at all.

Some consumer advocates have urged the FDA to issue a recall of all Baxter heparin, but the FDA rejected the idea, saying that the resulting heparin shortage would do more harm than good.
