ATV Accidents

All-terrain vehicles, known in short as ATVs, can be the source of much pleasure and fun. However, these unprotected, three-or-four-wheeled miniature vehicles can also induce injury and, in the worst accidents, death. Oftentimes, people either underestimate the strength, weight, and power of these machines, or they overestimate their own abilities to control the ATV’s.

Why do These Accidents Occur?

Statistics have shown that in 2006, there were 882 estimated ATV-related deaths and 146,600 estimated trips to the emergency room due to some sort of all-terrain vehicle accident. Of these numbers, approximately 19% of the deceased and 27% of the injured parties were children under the age of 16, indicating that a large number of people who do not yet have driver’s licenses or driving experience are operating ATV’s. Since these kids lack have the experience necessary to understand the power of motorized vehicles, they are more likely to lose control and collide with another object or person.

Studies have also shown that a large number of ATV accidents are alcohol-related. These vehicles were made for recreation, so many people tend to mix other forms of relaxation and recreation, such as alcohol, with this one. This often has detrimental results.

Negligence during ATV operation can have horrible results. Negligence encompasses anything from consuming an alcohol beverage prior to operating an ATV to allowing a youth under the age of 16 to drive one of these vehicles.
