Animal Bites

Animal bites are almost always unexpected incidents that can result not only in injury for the attacked party, but also infection and, unfortunately, disease. Any animal, domesticated or wild, poses the threat of attacking a human being. It is always good practice to be aware of what actions tend to aggravate and enrage animals to the point of violent reactions.

Dog and Cat Bites

Dog bites are the most common type of animal bite in occurrence these days. Typical provocation methods that would incite the animal to react in a violent manner include removal of the dog’s food while it is eating, touching, or striking the animal in a manner that it finds unacceptable, aggressive action towards the dog’s owner, or attempting to restrain the dog while it in engaged in conflict with another animal.

Cat bites tend to be less severe than dog bites, and they are not as common. Cat bites are more likely to cause infection, however, since their teeth tend to produce deeper puncture wounds in the skin, and therefore inject more bacteria under the skin.

Treatment

If you have been attacked and bitten by an animal, the first step is to take immediate care of the wound. Wash the injured area thoroughly with antibacterial soap and dress it accordingly. Contact a doctor in a few days if it begins to show signs of infection, such as swelling and oozing pus.

Following the attack of an animal, it is recommended that the injured party contacts the animal’s owner or animal control to notify them of the incident. This is always a good way to obtain information on the disease status of the animal.
