Wisconsin professor charged with sexual assault

Posted on Monday, October 17th, 2011 at 8:46 am

Felony charges will be issued against a University of Wisconsin-River Falls professor for sexually assaulting a child.

The arrest occurred at a local movie theatre where the professor was speaking extremely close to a 13-year-old girl. Employees of the movie theatre were uncomfortable with their interaction and before alerting authorities confirmed that the young girl was not his daughter. Probable cause was discovered when the young girl's 14-year-old boyfriend told an employee that they needed to call the police.

The professor has yet to stand to trial but is feeling the effects of the charges in his everyday life. According to his lawyer, his reputation is already tainted by the news of child sexual assault.

The arraignment is set for November 12,2011.

Physicians will most likely face malpractice lawsuit

Posted on Monday, August 22nd, 2011 at 3:58 am

A New England Journal of Medicine study claims that at some point during their career, most doctors will face a malpractice lawsuit.

According to the study, which looked at malpractice data from 1991 to 2005, 7.4 percent of doctors had faced a claim in any given year. Doctors practicing in high-risk fields have a greater chance of being sued by the time they are 65 than those practicing in low-risk fields, at a likelihood of 99 percent and 75 percent respectively.

Although a majority of the claims did not end in a monetary settlement, the fear of being sued has led many doctors to practice defensive medicine in order to protect themselves from the indirect costs associated with litigation. Defensive medicine involves the ordering of extra procedures and tests for a patient.
