Extendicare Health Services reportedly agreed to settle $38 million for allegedly committing abuse to nursing home residents and for wrongfully billing the government, The Telegraph reported on October 10.
The misconduct and abuse to residents inside several nursing home facilities were revealed by an investigation. Some residents reportedly remained unnoticed by staff after falls or after other incapacitating incidents that resulted in head injuries and fractures. The settlement also stated that Extendicare provided unnecessary medical services to its residents so they could increase their Medicare billing. Though the company agreed to the settlement, they denied all allegations. The bulk of the settlement of Extendicare will go to eight states where their facilities are located.
