Colleges in the United States are under fire from a federal agency due to poor handling of sexual assault complaints from their students, Reuters reported on May 1.
At least 55 colleges across the U.S., including prestigious universities, were subjected to investigation by the Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights due to alleged mishandling of sexual assault complaints from students. The colleges will be pushed to implement fair policies in handling sexual violence and are encouraged to give tougher punishments to sexual offenders. Agency’s assistant secretary Catherine Lhamon said they publicly identified the colleges in order to open up civil rights awareness and dialogue.
