Washington County accident kills 1

Posted on Tuesday, February 28th, 2012 at 1:04 pm

An Appleton woman has died after she was struck by a motor vehicle in Washington County. The accident happened near Holy Hill Road during extreme weather conditions.

The 58-year-old woman was driving on the south side of the road, when the snow caused her to drift into the median. She hit a barrier and was thrown into oncoming traffic. She was still able to control her vehicle, and put it in park on the shoulder of the northbound left lane.

After she parked her vehicle, the woman chose to leave her car, and stand beside it. A 26-year-old Milwaukee woman was driving north when she lost control of her vehicle, and slid into the woman and her car. The woman was thrown onto the highway, and was later pronounced dead at a hospital. The other driver was uninjured in the collision, but she had to be extracted from her vehicle.

Police closed down the northbound lanes of the road for four hours in order to investigate the car accident.

Study shows elevated levels of arsenic in organic food

Posted on Monday, February 20th, 2012 at 4:23 pm

A study conducted at Dartmouth University shows a connection between elevated levels of arsenic and organic brown rice syrup in certain foods. The researchers singled out this ingredient, organic brown rice syrup, as the cause for the increased levels of arsenic in the organic products.

The organic products that were evaluated in the study include organic baby formula, organic cereal bars, and different energy shots. The brown rice syrup contains inorganic arsenic which can cause several health complications, including cancer development, diabetes, and heart disease.

This syrup has been used in organic food products in order to replace high fructose corn syrup as a healthier alternative. Researchers believe that the high levels of arsenic could be damaging to small children due to their body size and mass.

A car accident in Milton has left an 8-year-old girl dead. The accident happened last Friday around 9:00 p.m. near Highway 26. Two cars collided into one another at the intersection of Highway 26 and Arthur Drive.

A 31-year-old driver was traveling with his two young children, ages 8 and 5, when he collided with another vehicle. The 8-year-old girl was pronounced dead at the scene, and her 5-year-old brother was taken to a children’s hospital in Madison, where he is being treated for severe injuries.

The other motor vehicle was being driven by a 55-year-old man, who had a 39-year-old female passenger in the car. The investigation has turned up information regarding several factors in the car accident. Police reported that all individuals involved were wearing their seat belts correctly, and they do not believe that alcohol was involved in the crash.

Madison athletic director accused of sexual assault at university

Posted on Tuesday, February 7th, 2012 at 2:07 pm

The University of Wisconsin football team went to California in December to take part in the Rose Bowl. While in California, an alleged sexual assault occurred between a student who traveled with the team and the senior associate athletic director.

The athletic director has taken full responsibility for the incidents from the night in question, and resigned from his position as soon as the team returned to Madison, Wisconsin. The male student, who chooses to remain anonymous during the investigation, told his boss that the director approached him at a hotel party and put his hand down his pants.

The student says that he slapped the man’s hand away from him and immediately alerted someone else. When the team returned to Madison, university officials were notified of the chain of events and launched an investigation into the allegations. The director resigned from his position on January 6.
