Hospital in Florida deemed responsible for patient’s injuries

Posted on Monday, January 30th, 2012 at 4:59 pm

Memorial Hospital, which is located in Jacksonville, Florida, has been deemed responsible by a jury for the injuries suffered by one of it’s patients.

In 2007, a well-qualified candidate for gastric bypass surgery chose to have the surgery at Memorial Hospital. He met with the doctors and staff several times before the actual surgery and understood the surgery in and out. On the actual day of the surgery in March of that year, doctors experienced unforeseen complications.

The recovery process did not go as according to plan, and additional complications arose. The man was being ignored in his hospital bed, while life-altering complications were forming. He developed critical brain damage, which has changed his life in the most drastic of ways. The once energetic man was now stuck in a wheelchair unable to eat a meal without the help of someone else.

These injuries were a direct result of the hospital’s negligent care for the man, according to the jury. They released a verdict, ordering Memorial Hospital to pay the malpractice victim $177 million. The hospital has plans on appealing this medical malpractice verdict, but has yet to file any paperwork.

Carnival cruise ship submerges off Italian coast

Posted on Monday, January 16th, 2012 at 4:01 pm

The Carnival cruise ship, Costa Concordia, hit several rocks on it’s chartered course on Friday, January 13 in Italy. This crash caused the ship to start tipping and a panicked evacuation to take place.

There were more than 4,200 people on board the cruise liner when the rocks were struck near Giglio, Italy. People were jumping off of decks and trying to swim to shore. As of now, there are six confirmed deaths and 16 people still missing. Rescue divers are trying their hardest to search for survivors amidst the wreckage.

The accident is being blamed solely on the captain of the Costa Concordia. According to Carnival, the captain made a large mistake when trying to get closer to the coast line in order for local people to view the massive ship. The negligence of the captain is the main reason for the disastrous event and he has been arrested.

Our thoughts go out to the victims’ families and friends during this tragic time.

569 traffic fatalities in Wisconsin for 2011

Posted on Monday, January 9th, 2012 at 12:16 pm

According to data, there were 569 traffic fatalities in the state of Wisconsin in 2011. The Wisconsin Department of Transportation announced this data regarding traffic crashes and deaths earlier this year.

This amount of fatalities is higher than the 2010 number but significantly lower than the five-year average. For the fourth year in a row, Wisconsin has experienced fewer than 600 fatalities.

Officials believe that several factors could have contributed to the lower number of deaths. High gas prices and the poor economy might have deterred Wisconsin residents from driving as much during 2011, which in return resulted in fewer car accidents.

Jury awards slip and fall victim $7.5 million

Posted on Wednesday, January 4th, 2012 at 11:47 am

A jury has ordered Starbucks to pay $7.5 million as a result of a slip and fall lawsuit against the company.

The accident took place in 2008 when a customer walked through an area that had just been mopped at a Vista Starbucks in San Diego. The man lost his footing and fell to the floor, striking his head.

The head injury created complications for the man and caused him to be unable to return to work. The jury’s verdict of $7.5 million was based on medical expenses, income loss as well as the loss of enjoyment of life.
