Girl dies after dental surgery, family files lawsuit

Posted on Monday, December 19th, 2011 at 10:03 am

A 17-year-old girl in Maryland is dead after wisdom tooth surgery. The surgery took place on March 28 and while she was under anesthesia, a decreased amount of oxygen was distributed to the girl and she died 10 days later as a result of hypoxia.

The family of the girl, who was an only child, have filed a medical malpractice lawsuit against the oral surgeon as well as the anesthesiologist, citing negligence on their part.

During the surgery, the girl’s heart rate became alarmingly slow and the doctors’ failed to notice her condition. The large brain injury that caused her death was directly related to the hypoxia.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to the victim’s family and friends during this difficult time.
