When a child wins a personal injury settlement, the child may not know what to do with the money. For this reason, many courts put the child's money in a blocked bank account, which can only be accessed once the child turns 18.
The courts typically do not allow the child's parents to access part or all of the funds because they want to prevent parents from using the money to benefit themselves. However, parents may be able to access some of the funds if they can show that the funds will be used for the child's care or medical expenses.
