Mercury Poisoning

Most people trust the food they eat to be safe. Many people also enjoy the taste of fish and eat seafood on a regular basis. Unfortunately, the consumption of fish, other aquatic animals, and animals that consume fish is the number one cause of mercury poisoning. Mercury poisoning is also a name given to cases of methylmercury poisoning. Methylmercury is a mercury-based compound that also consists of bacteria and other natural elements.

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control, people who are most prone to becoming ill due to mercury poisoning are individuals with kidney problems, pregnant women, nursing women, and young children. Mercury can easily pass through the blood stream and into a mother’s breast milk. People who live off the coastline tend to have the highest levels of methylmercury in their bodies. Fish that have proven to contain extremely high amounts of methylmercury are: golden snapper, swordfish, ray, orange roughy, ling, shark, and king mackerel.

Symptoms and Causes of Mercury Poisoning

Methylmercury can cause depression, blurred vision, dizziness, irregular breathing, allergies, psychological problems, abdominal cramping, blood pressure problems, chronic headaches, fatigue, and muscle weakness.

Cases of mercury poisoning have also been linked to improperly disposed fluorescent bulbs, improperly used and disposed batteries, dental amalgam fillings and waste, and broken thermometers.
