Common Head Injuries

Any time that you sustain some sort of blow or trauma to the head, you have suffered a head injury. Typically, people do not associate head injuries with facial impairment, such as a broken nose, although that sort of damage also falls under the same category. What Types of Head Injuries Exist?

Typically, head injuries can be divided into two different categories: internal and external damage. Internal damage includes injuries that pose more severe threats to an individual’s health and well-being, while external damage typically encompasses surface harm that is not life-threatening. This latter type of injury includes scalp damage, such as cuts or minor bruises. They typically bleed a lot, causing them to look worse than they actually are.

Internal Head Injuries

Internal injuries have the potential to be extremely damaging to one’s health. Severe internal harm can be life-threatening, especially if left untreated. Common internal injuries include the following:

  • Concussion: A type of internal head injury that is, by definition, not life-threatening, but that does cause temporary damage to the brain. Typically concussed individuals lose a sense of awareness for a period of time.
  • Skull Fracture: This injury occurs beneath the surface of the skin, and depending on the type of break, it can cause direct damage to the brain.
  • Intracranial Hematoma (ICH): This sort of damage occurs when blood clots form and become lodged around the brain. Hematomas can be extremely damaging and have the potential to claim the victim’s life.
