Fireworks – Related Injuries
Fireworks are an integral part of Americans’ celebration of the Fourth of July as well as New Year’s Eve. They are photographed from every angle and some of the best-loved decorative displays. Unfortunately, they are also quite dangerous and capable of inflicting serious injuries. These injuries are most common on and around holidays associated with fireworks celebrations, July Fourth and New Year’s Eve.
In 2006 alone, 11 people died and nearly 10,000 people were treated in emergency rooms across the United States for injuries that were related to or caused by fireworks. Nearly 5% of all fireworks-related injuries require hospitalization for some length of time.
Proving the point of researchers, out of all of the injuries due to fireworks in 2006, two-thirds of them occurred between June 16th and July 16th. One out of every three injuries was to a person under the age of 15. In addition, three-times more males than females were injured. And nearly half (47%) of all injuries afflicted people under 20.
When people are injured, they are most frequently injured on the hands (2,300 injuries), in the eyes (1,500 injuries), or on the head, face, and ears (1,400 injuries). More than half of all of the injuries were burn injuries. This was the most common injury on all body parts except for the eye and head area. In this area, contusions, lacerations, and foreign bodies in the eyes occurred more frequently.
Fireworks-related injuries are commonly associated with blindness, third degree burns, and permanent scarring. In addition, they can be the cause of life-threatening residential and motor vehicle fires.
When tallying up the causes of injuries, firecrackers are most commonly the culprit. They are responsible for roughly 1,300 injuries. Sparklers, which burn at 1000 degrees, are the second most common source of injury with 1,000. Rockets came in third with 800 injuries.
