Preventing Jackknifing

If you have ever lived in a place with extreme weather in the winter months, then you have probably seen an accident on the road involving a truck jackknifing.

Jackknifing is a serious condition that usually involves long commercial trucks. There are three most common ways that drivers try to compensate to prevent jackknifing:

  • If a trucker locks the steering brakes then the truck will move straight, no matter how hard the driver tries to turn the wheels. This is usually the best situation, though you lose your ability to steer.
  • Locking the drive axles the rig will eventually jackknife, but you know that it will be the cab that turns, allow you to choose which part of your vehicle moves.
  • Locking the trailer axles will cause the trailer to sway uncontrollably, but will eventually cause the vehicle to gain its stability back.

Of course, these tools at the disposal of truckers only work if there is no one else on the road. It is very unlikely that this will be the case. If you are a driver of a smaller vehicle and notice a truck starting to jackknife it is important to keep a very large distance between you and the truck to prevent a collision.
